Floodproof Basement Requirements
The Fargo City Commission has adopted new floodproofing requirements effective March 2014. All single and multi-family residential structures within the 41-foot river stage are now being mandated to meet all floodproofing requirements. This includes structures to be built in Letter of Map Revision (LOMR) areas. Commercial and industrial construction have new requirements too.
Floodproof certification requires design by a registered professional, additional structural components and a 7-point construction inspection by the Fargo Inspections Department. Floodproofing a foundation adds between $4-6,000 in cost.
Why build a floodproof basement?
- Lower flood insurance rating on standard policies
- Increased salability
- Peace of mind
- No floodproofed foundation has ever failed in Fargo
