American Elm
Ulmus americana
This tree is perhaps the most beloved of them all. It is extremely easy to plant and establish, grows fast, thrives in harsh climates, and provides a beautiful arched canopy over city streets. As we well know, Dutch elm disease (DED) has been wreaking havoc with these trees nationwide for 70+ years. With the implementation of a DED program, we limit the loss of American elm to 1-3% annually.
Coincidentally, the return of the American elm is not far off. Prairie Expedition Elm (developed at NDSU) and Valley Forge Elm are slated for introduction in the next few years. The City of Fargo will be planting 10 Valley Forge Elm in the spring of 2007 in selected areas across the city.
