Red Maple is not recommended for planting in this area. There are a couple of its cultivars that have been planted, but most are not expected to fully reach maturity. The most difficult aspect of Red Maples growing in our city is the high pH. The nicest Red Maple growing in central Minnesota, when planted in Fargo, will most likely turn a red fall color the first year. Subsequent years it will be lucky to attain orange coloration, again, this is due to our high pH clay based soils.
