Tobacco Education Mini-Grant Policies & Guidelines for Fargo and Cass County Schools
Fargo Cass Public Health is pleased to announce a new opportunity for area schools to help improve the health of their students: The Tobacco Education Mini-Grant Program. This new program will provide educators and students an opportunity to raise awareness on a variety of topics as they relate to tobacco-free lifestyles.
The Tobacco Prevention & Control Mini-Grant Program will provide educators and students an opportunity to raise awareness on a variety of topics as they relate to tobacco-free lifestyles. The mini-grant may coincide with the Great American Smoke Out, November 19, 2009, but this is not a requirement for the program. Schools or educators wishing to take part in this program will find all the details in the attached documents. Two additional Tobacco Education Mini-Grant opportunities will be available later during the 2009-2010 school year.
Consideration for mini-grants will be given to applications which:
1. Show the school/district is working toward implementing a Comprehensive School Tobacco Policy. (see Model Policy Checklist and Model ND Policy)
2. Demonstrate education on the following areas:
• Dangers of secondhand smoke
• Education on benefits of increasing cigarette excise tax
• Educate on benefits of smoke-free communities/public work places
• Education on benefits of implementing a comprehensive tobacco-free school policy
• Education on deceitful marketing tactics of the tobacco industry
3. Clearly show focus on improving students’ quality of life through valuable tobacco-relate education and/or prevention materials
4. Are creative in their approach, allowing students to expand their knowledge of tobacco-related issues
Consideration for mini-grants will not be given to applications which:
1. Focus on issues other than tobacco
2. Do not provide students with valuable tobacco-related information
3. Do not contain educational content
The Tobacco Education Mini-Grant Program will award:
1. Tobacco-focused mini-grants for creative and educational learning opportunities.
2. Mini-grants encouraging student participation in an effort to promote awareness and education of tobacco-related issues.
3. Mini-grants up to $400 per event with sufficient budget justification.
Due date for Tobacco Mini-Grant Application
• Mini-grant applications must be received no later than 4:30 pm on October 16, 2009.
• Mini-grant recipients will be determined by Wednesday, October 21, 2009.
• Award letters and contracts will be sent on Friday, October 23, 2009.

***NOTE: Those schools selected to receive a Tobacco Education Mini-Grant must sign and return the Contract for Services Agreement that will accompany the mini-grant award letter. Funds will not be reimbursed until Fargo Cass Public Health has received the signed contract.
