17. Easy Readers
The books in the Easy Reader collection are primarily for beginning readers. The collection contains fiction and nonfiction books with illustrations, simplified and/or controlled vocabulary, large typeface and few words per page. Some of the higher level readers also contain short chapters.
Currently, the Easy Reader collection at the main library is divided into three reading levels; because of space constraints, this is currently not the case at all library facilities. Books associated with each level are designated by a color-coded sticker. Readers with red stickers (Level 1) are generally appropriate for beginning readers. Readers with blue stickers (Level 2) are generally appropriate for intermediate readers. Readers with green stickers (Level 3) are generally appropriate for newly independent readers transitioning into longer, more difficult books.
Easy readers on topics appropriate and popular with this age group are purchased for this collection. Many popular fiction easy readers are published in series, and it is important to purchase the majority of the titles in these series. Most titles in this collection are purchased in hardcover editions due to durability issues.
