Minutes of April 25, 2001

Board Chair Virginia Dambach called the meeting to order at 4:00 pm

Present: Virginia Dambach, Betty Kerns, Jean Rayl, Lynn Wheeler, Ryn Pitts, Staff Liaison Edie Discher, Friends Liaison Bev Quamme
Absent: Prakash Mathew

Order of Agenda
No additions or corrections were made to the agenda.

Minutes
There were no additions or corrections made to the March 27 minutes. Rayl made the motion to approve the minutes. Kerns seconded the motion; the motion carried.

Staff Report
Beth Postema and Lori West presented the board with circulation and collection development information.

LSSI Management Report
Wheeler showed the board a copy of the FPL home page of the Web site. Four dumpsters’ worth of trash was thrown away on clean up day. At the open house during National Library Week the staff conducted an informal survey. The responses from patrons complimented the staff for their service and the new technology that the library is making available to the public. The library ordered the entire collection of Cliffs notes, which are beginning to circulate. The library will receive the Red River Watercolor book collection that Jackie Lang will catalog. Publisher’s Weekly editor Nora Rawlinson will visit the library and discuss trends in publishing on May 10, 2000. There is a new word processing workstation available to the public and Discher reported that it has been popular with the public. The American Eagles gave the FPL a check for $250 to supplement the large print collection.

Statistical Reports
There is an 11% overall increase in print. The video collection for adults was down because it was split and one half was moved to Youth Services. Wheeler described a discrepancy in the amount of materials ordered between the number in Pals and the number JoAnn Mikula keeps. Wheeler will continue to investigate the problem and report to the board in May.

Friends of the Fargo Public Library Report
The Friends sponsored the Teddy Roosevelt program during National Library Week with over 50 people in attendance. The Friends held a used booksale during the library’s open house and made $300. The next booksale will take place during the Fargo Street Fair in July.

At the April 17th meeting the Friends funded $440 for the purchase of insulated mugs for the Adult Summer Reading Program. They also approved 7 memorials for $25 each in memory of Vernette Nelson and Camp Caste(?) in memory of Ken Hilburn. Bob Mason will replace Quamme as board liaison after Friends annual meeting. The membership is 194 households for $5697 in membership money. There are 48 volunteers on the Friends volunteer list and 411 households on their database.

A. Long-range Planning Process:
Ron Dubberly of Dubberly Associates discussed the long range planning process with the board.

New Business

A. ALA Annual Conference, San Francisco
: Wheeler expressed interest in sending a board member to the ALA conference in San Francisco on June 14 through June 19, 2001. She extended an invitation to board members who would like to attend. Dambach asked that board members contact Wheeler if they are interested.

The next board meeting will be on May 22, 2001 at 4:00 p.m.
