Bike Lane/Path Projects

Many on street bike facilities have already been completed and are now providing bicyclists with safer routes to their destinations. Many more routes are planned. Below is a list of projects that have been completed and projects planned in the future:

Completed

  • 1st Ave. N. – University Drive to 25th Street: Wide outside lane built in 2011.
  • 4th Ave. N. – 2nd St. to Broadway: Converted from 4 to 3-lane road section with striped on-street bike lane in May 2010.
  • 12th Ave. N. – Red River/Elm St. to 9th St.: Street reconstructed in 2011 and is a 3-lane roadway with on-street bike lanes on each side.
  • Elm St. – 15th Ave. N. to 35th Ave. N. (Edgewood Golf Course):  Street currently is signed as a share-the-road facility and shared lane markings were installed in 2011.
  • 1st Ave. S. – University Drive to 21st St.: Installed on-street bike lanes in 2010. 
  • Fiechtner Drive/5th Ave. S. – Westrac Drive to 25th St.: Installed on-street bike lanes in 2010; connects to shared use path along the west side of 25th St.
  • 9th Ave. S./Westrac Drive – 45th St. to Fiechtner Drive: Installed on-street bike lanes in 2010 & 2011.
  • NDSU Downtown Access Study: Routes to connect the downtown locations and the main campus.  18th St, Dakota Drive, Barrett St, 11th, 7th and Roberts Streets for north-south connections and 8th and 11th Avenues N for east-west connections have been striped with shared lane markings south of 12th Avenue N.

Projects to be Constructed in 2012

  • 1st Ave. S. – 4th St. to 10th St.: Shared lane markings will be installed.
  • 4th St. – 1st Ave. N. to 12th Ave. N.: Converting street from 4 to 3-lane road section with striped on-street bike lanes between 1st Ave. N. and 9th St., shared lane markings between 9th Ave. N. and 12th Ave. N.  This would tie in the downtown area to the markings along 12th Ave. N.

2012 Projects Pending City Commission Approval

  • 4th Ave. N. – Roberts to University Drive: Plan calls for installing bike lanes on each side of street to connect river path to University Drive.
  • 10th St. N. – 12th Ave. N. to 17th Ave. N.: Street reconstruction occurring this year to 2-lane section with striped on-street bike lane on left side.
  • University Drive – 19th Ave. N. to 12th Ave. N.: Street currently wide enough to provide a striped 6’ on-street bike lane on east side with only striping modifications to street. 

Future Locations

  • Downtown 1-way pairs – NP and 1st Ave. N. – 2nd St. to University Drive: Streets are to be reconstructed and converted to 2-way operations in 2013.
  • University Drive – 12th Ave. N. to 4th Ave. N.: Street currently wide enough to provide a striped 6’ on-street bike lane on east side with only striping modifications to street.  A driving lane would be eliminated between 8th Avenue and 4th Avenue and a buffered bike lane would be installed.
  • 10th St. – 4th Ave. N. to 12th Ave. N.: Street currently wide enough to provide a buffered striped 6’ on-street bike lane on west side with only striping modifications to street.
  • 4th St. – Linden Ave. /17th Ave. S. to NP Ave.: A mix of shared lane markings and on-street bike lanes are being reviewed along this portion of 4th St.
