Frequently asked questions

When will my test results be in?

Test results for chlamydia and gonorrhea come back in 7 days. We only notify those clients whose results are positive. Pap smear results usually take two to three weeks. It's always best to check back with us if you have moved or phone number has changed, in case we have been unable to contact you.

Are emergency contraceptive pills available, and do I need an appointment to get them?

Emergency contraceptive pills (ECPs) are available on a walk-in basis. ECPs are a high dose of birth control hormones. They are to be taken as soon as possible after unprotected intercourse, preferably within 72 hours; however, they can be taken up to five days later.

How do ECPs work?

They work in a number of ways.  Primarily, they work by thickening up the mucus in the women’s cervix and fallopian tubes, preventing the egg and sperm from meeting for fertilization. Also, they may prevent the ovaries from releasing an egg. ECPs can be up to 85% effective, if used correctly.

I am bleeding while taking oral contraceptives (regular birth control pills). Why is this happening?

Spotting or bleeding between periods while on the pill can be caused by a variety of things. Some causes include missed pills, stress, infections and diet changes. If you have not missed any pills, please discuss the situation with your provider. Use a backup method of birth control if you are bleeding between periods since your pills may not be fully effective.

I am late in getting my Depo injection for birth control. What should I do?

We recommended that you use a backup method of birth control, such as condoms, and come into the clinic as soon as possible for further assessment.

Can I have an annual exam if I have my period?

Usually not, but check with your provider to be sure.  We recommend no tampons or sexual intercourse 48 hours prior to a pap smear exam, as this could interfere with your test results.

I dropped one of my birth control pills and I can't find it. How do I replace it?

Take the next day's pill, or one from a spare pack, then call us to discuss your options for replacing the missing pill.

Do you do pregnancy tests using blood samples?

No. We perform urine pregnancy tests, which have been shown to be just as sensitive as blood pregnancy tests.

How soon after conception is a pregnancy test accurate?

A positive pregnancy test result can be obtained as soon as 12 to 14 days after conception.
